Soccer Blue Jays Open Season With Home Matches

Washington Boys SoccerOpening up GAC Central play on Thursday, September 2, the Washington High School varsity soccer Blue Jays went the distance with Ft. Zumwalt East before falling at home on penalty kicks, 2-1.

The game was tied 1-1 after 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime sessions. Penalty kicks then decided the outcome with the Blue Jays falling short.

Washington (1-1) scored first when Cole Click carried the ball down the field and fired a shot past the East goalkeeper to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. Travis Bieg was credited with the assist.

Ft. Zumwalt East tied the game 1-1 late in the first half and the score remained the same until the penalty kick shootout.

Micah Gargrave was in goal for Washington.

Ft. Zumwalt East defeated Washington in the junior varsity match, 4-1.

The Blue Jays have high hopes for a successful soccer campaign under the direction of Head Coach Derek Schriewer and Assistant Coach Brian Dougherty.

Washington opened its varsity season with a 1-0 home victory over Sullivan on Tuesday, August 31. The game ended five minutes into the second half due to storms in the area.
