Relay for LifeWashington High School’s 17th Annual Jordan Scheer Memorial Children’s Relay for Life took place on Friday, April 22.

The event took place at Scanlan Stadium at Washington High School.

The event was put together by the WHS Student Council and Leadership class. Advisors are Allison Graves and Samantha Loepker.

The theme this year was, “Wild For A Cure.”

There were approximately 300 elementary students in attendance and over 75 volunteers from Student Council, National Honor Society, NJHS, and school staff members.

Over $26,000 was raised from this year’s event with more donations expected to come in over the next few weeks. Approximately $365,000 has now been raised in the 17 years of the event.

Proceeds from the event are donated to the Franklin County Relay for Life and benefit the American Cancer Society and cancer awareness.

Students in grades three through six from the School District of Washington and neighboring parochial schools participated in the event.

This year’s event chairs were seniors Amber Christeson, Anna McFarland and Octavio Meza, and juniors Lily Brickel and Matthew Freitag.

The relay is named in honor of Jordan Scheer, a WHS graduate who lost his battle to cancer shortly after his graduation in 2005.
