Pride of WashingtonThe Washington High School Band, “The Pride of Washington” competed at the Sullivan Marching Band Competition on Saturday,” September 17, at Sullivan High School.

In the preliminaries, the Blue Jays captured second-place honors in their division. Washington High School kept it going in the finals, placing third overall.

Stewart Alloway is the Director of Bands at Washington High School. Jacob Bisaillon is Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Percussion. Madeline Watts is Assistant Director of Bands/ Director of Bands at Washington Middle School.

“Coming into Sullivan this year was much different than last year being the defending champion. The students have never been in a situation where they are the ones who everyone is looking to catch,” Alloway said. “Even though our outcome was third place, the students had two incredible performances to the point where I had other band directors coming up to me saying, ‘WOW, where did you all come from?’

"Our show is much more complicated than last year, and the fact we were able to place top three in most captions - music, visual and general effect - with only two movements out of four while going against other groups who had their entire show out is quite an impressive feet."

WHS Marching Band Festival

The Washington High School Band Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 1.

The festival features a field competition at WHS. There will be no parade this year. The field competition at Scanlan Stadium begins at approximately 10:15 a.m.

As the hosts, the Washington High School Marching Blue Jays, also known as “The Pride of Washington,” will give an exhibition performance at 3:45 p.m. They are not eligible for awards.

The Pride of Washington is comprised of students in grades 9-12. They begin rehearsing in June and finish their season in November with football playoff games. They travel to local competitions and compete at BOA St. Louis. Their show brings competitive elements to the field as well as interesting music, design, and color guard.

The Blue Jays also are involved in many parades throughout the year. They start the season with the Washington Fair Parade in August. They also march in the City of Washington’s Christmas Parade held the day after Thanksgiving.
