Washington High School Varsity Soccer Begins Season on High Note
Washington High School varsity girls soccer is off to a solid start to the season.
The Lady Jays, coached by Jalynda Vodnansky, opened the season by taking first-place honors at the Rolla Tournament, defeating Borgia 3-1, Rolla 4-1, and Springfield Catholic, 2-1.
Washington also owns victories so far this season over Holt 3-1 and Logan-Rogersville, 1-0.
The Lady Jays had their first GAC Central home match on Tuesday, April 1, against Ft. Zumwalt East. Battling some injury problems, Washington held a 2-0 lead at halftime, but couldn’t hold on in a double overtime loss, 3-2.
Natalie Vogel and Kloey O’Connell scored goals for the Lady Jays. Callie Briggs was Washington’s goalie.
Through eight games, O’Connell leads the team with five goals. Vogel, Sammy Williams and Destiny Highley each have two goals. Presley Kiser, Karisa Latcher, Addyson Meyer, Madi Sperry and Lilly Thornton also have found the back of the net. Addie Vodnansky leads the team with five assists. Sophia Koch and Thornton both have two assists.
Briggs, a freshman, has seen most of the time in goal, recording a 5-3 record with a goals against percentage of 2.50. Fellow freshman Reis Cowsert also has seen time in goal.
