Washington Middle School Named National School of Character
Washington Middle School has been recognized as a National School of Character by Character.org, a prestigious national honor that celebrates schools demonstrating a strong commitment to character development and its impact on academic achievement, student behavior, and school climate.
This distinction follows the school’s earlier designation as a State School of Character, further validating the success of its efforts to foster a culture centered around respect, responsibility, integrity, and other core ethical values. These efforts are grounded in Character.org’s 11 Principles Framework for Schools, which emphasizes the importance of cultivating a caring school community where students are empowered to make ethical decisions and grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens.
“We are thrilled to receive this national recognition,” said Washington Middle School Principal Laura Bruckerhoff. “Our staff, students, and families have worked together to integrate character education into every aspect of our school culture.”
Character.org, a national nonprofit organization and leader in character development, announced the selection of 71 schools (5 from Missouri) and three districts as 2024 National Schools and Districts of Character. The honorees will be celebrated at the organization’s upcoming National Forum, an annual event recognizing schools that model excellence in character education.
“We are pleased to announce and celebrate the schools and school districts that have earned this national recognition,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character.org. “Each of these schools has put in place a comprehensive approach to help students understand, care about, and consistently practice the character strengths that will help them flourish in school, in relationships, in the workplace, and as citizens.”
Since its inception, the National Schools of Character program has impacted more than three million students, educators, and families across the country. Each applying school is rigorously evaluated by a team of trained assessors to ensure alignment with Character.org’s high standards.
“There is an ethic of care at these schools,” said Lori Soifer, Director of the Schools of Character program. “Working together with students, parents, and community members, these schools are creating stronger communities focused on character.”
