Washington High School Softball Places Second at Seckman Tournament
Washington High School softball competed at the Seckman Varsity Tournament on Friday and Saturday, September 12 and 13, at the Arnold Athletic Association.
The Lady Jays (10-5) finished in second place in the tournament, falling to Festus in the championship game, 4-2.
Washington, coached by Grant Young and assisted by Tim Zumsteg, won its pool with victories over Pacific 20-8 and Seckman, 3-0.
Harper Brown, a sophomore, was the winning pitcher against Pacific. Makenzie Harrison, a freshman, was the winning pitcher against Seckman. Senior Ryleigh Damschroeder and junior Emily Schwoeppe also pitched during the three games of the tournament.
Washington collected 16 hits in the tournament opener against Pacific, highlighted on a grand slam home run by freshman Riley Coleman, her fifth home run of the season.
In the win over Seckman, the Lady Jays scored all three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted on a two-run single by sophomore Ella Ruether.
Washington has had plenty of offense over the first 15 games of the season.
Senior Maddie Kluesner has been a major contributor to the offense along with a host of others, including junior Madisen Meyer, sophomores Colsie Lange and Macy Wieland, and Coleman, Brown, Harrison, Schwoeppe, and seniors Trista Fleer and Riley Elz-Bade.
Wieland had a double and a triple in the championship game against Festus. Meyer had a batting average of .667 for the tournament with three doubles and five RBIs.
