Washington High School Leadership Students Share Relay for Life Message with Elementary Students
Washington High School student council members visited Augusta Elementary on Wednesday, January 21, to promote the 21th Annual Jordan Scheer Memorial Children’s Relay for Life, scheduled for Friday, April 24, at Scanlan Stadium on the WHS campus.
The event is put together by the WHS student council and leadership class. Proceeds are donated to the Franklin County Relay for Life and benefit the American Cancer Society and cancer awareness.
After raising $23,000 last year, the goal this year is to raise $26,000 in 2026. Approximately $442,000 has been raised in the 20 years of the event.
The theme for this year’s event is. “Riding Together Toward a Cure.”
Three of the event’s Student Chairs, Emma Grafrath, Nathan Oreskovic and Natalie Metcalf, were on hand at Augusta to hand out flyers and speak to the students about the Children’s Relay for Life. Student Chairs will visit all seven elementary schools in the district over the next couple of weeks to promote the event.
The relay is named in honor of Jordan Scheer, a WHS graduate who lost his battle to cancer shortly after his graduation in 2005.
Third through sixth grade children from area schools will participate in the event. They must have already registered to attend.
