Jordan Scheer Memorial Children's Relay for Life
Washington High School’s 20th Annual Jordan Scheer Memorial Children’s Relay for Life took place on Friday, April 25, in the Blue Jay Gymnasium.
The event was put together by the WHS Student Council and Leadership class. Advisors are Allison Chaney and Rachel Wehmeyer.
The theme this year was, “Sailing for a Cure!”
There were approximately 275 elementary students in attendance and over 75 volunteers from Student Council, National Honor Society, NJHS, and school staff members.
As of the day of the event, a total of $23,960 was raised from this year’s event. More donations are expected over the next few weeks. Approximately $434,000 has been raised in the 20 years of the event.
Proceeds from the event are donated to the Franklin County Relay for Life and benefit the American Cancer Society and cancer awareness.
Students in grades three through six from the School District of Washington and area parochial schools participated in the event.
Event chairs are seniors Josie Kluesner, Cooper Guss and Luke Mauchenheimer, and juniors Madelyn Ley, Emma Grafrath and Nathan Oreskovic.
The relay is named in honor of Jordan Scheer, a WHS graduate who lost his battle to cancer shortly after his graduation in 2005.
The top fundraising schools were Immanuel Lutheran (first place), Marthasville Elementary (second place) and Labadie Elementary (third place).
