FRCC Building Construction Students Build New Pavilion at Miller Post Nature Reserve
Students in the Building Construction program at Four Rivers Career Center have completed work on a brand-new pavilion at the Miller Post Nature Reserve in Washington. The project, which took place over the 2024-25 school year, culminated in a ribbon cutting ceremony held Monday, May 5.
The 30’ x 40’ pavilion was built in partnership with the Washington Parks and Recreation Department, which approached FRCC about the project last year.
Rob York, Building Construction Instructor at Four Rivers Career Center, led the effort with both his morning and afternoon student groups participating.
“It was something that fit into our curriculum and was a great project for students,” York said. “The Parks and Recreation Department got started on the dirt work and concrete. At the same time, we started precutting post and post bracing in our shop. We started framing on the pavilion about the same time they were finishing up their concrete work. They continued to work moving dirt, finish grading, and seeding grass while we were working on the framing.”
The collaboration gave students valuable hands-on experience while contributing a lasting asset to the community. The new pavilion will serve as a gathering space for visitors to the nature reserve, offering a covered area for events, education, and recreation.
“It’s been great working with Parks and Recreation on this project,” York added. “We hope to work with them on future projects like a possible cabin restoration at the Miller Post Nature Reserve.”
