Blue Jays Open Basketball Season at Borgia Turkey Tournament
Washington High School opened its varsity boys basketball season at the 73rd Annual St. Francis Borgia Thanksgiving Tournament with games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, November 26, 28 and 29.
The Blue Jays, seeded fifth, posted a 1-2 record at the tournament. They lost their first two games to Confluence Prep 71-57 and Pacific 51-50, but bounced back to defeat Owensville to conclude the event, 53-46.
In the win over Owensville, Nakai Scott led the Blue Jays with 17 points and three assists. Ben Gelinas and Demetrius Lockett both scored 11 points. Gelinas added eight rebounds and Lockett grabbed five boards. Colin Briggs pitched in with four points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Andrew Elbert had two points.
Gelinas, who represented Washington on the all-tournament team, had a big game against Pacific with 19 points and six rebounds. Scott added 16 points and five rebounds. Lockett added four points and six assists.
In the opening round loss to Confluence, four Blue Jays scored in double figures. Lockett collected 13 points and four assists. Gelinas and Scott both scored 12 points. Gelinas grabbed 10 rebounds while Scott had six assists. Freshman Kolby Steiger scored 10 points in his first high school game.
