Madison Brune Named Board of Education Student Representative
Madison Brune, a junior at Washington High School, is the new student adviser for the School District of Washington’s Board of Education. She was sworn in during the January 21 meeting.
Brune replaces Grace Gargrave as the student adviser to the Board. The terms are for one year.
Gargrave, in her final meeting as student representative, was recognized by the Board of Education for her year of service.
Interested student candidates recently went through an application and interview process with administration prior to being selected by the high school student body.
“I first learned about this position from the people who have held it before me. Seeing how they filled the role inspired me to want to impact the district in a similar way,” Brune said. “By being accepted, I am overjoyed about the opportunities presented and look forward to the exposure I will gain from it. I want to soak up as much information as possible so it can be shared with others and be used as building blocks for my future.”
Madison is highly involved with different clubs and groups at Washington High School, including National Honor Society, Junior WINGS Board, Link Crew, cross country, track and field, and is a manager for the varsity boys basketball team. She’s also the Junior Class Vice President.
Madison has enjoyed the classes she has taken at WHS.
“My sophomore year, I took AP GOV and had Mrs. (Allison) Chaney as my teacher, who is incredibly smart,” Brune said. “She made the class seem more approachable as it’s a higher-level course. History has always been my favorite subject, specifically law and government, and I looked forward to that class every day.”
“Being a student at Washington High School has broadened my horizons in a very positive way and advanced my social skills tremendously,” Brune said. “I have made so many friends and connections through the opportunities given in the Washington School District that I am very grateful for. Creating these soft skills now, and realizing the importance, has been an eye-opening personal development.”
Outside of school, Brune has many hobbies and interests.
“In my free time, I like to bake cookies and other baked goods for friends and family. I want to be a private chef in the future and love to be in the kitchen,” she said. “I also like to watch true crime documentaries revolving around the system of law. It is a very interesting topic that I like to learn and think more about.”
Madison is the daughter of Brian Brune and Sarah Heidmann.
The student adviser is expected to attend all regular board meetings, give student adviser reports, and may be asked to report on particular issues. The adviser also is expected to communicate with students throughout the district on a regular basis.
The student adviser does not sit in on executive sessions or is privy to any confidential information.
