Washington High School Scholar Bowl Team Claims District Championship
The Washington High School scholar bowl team captured the Class 5 District 3 title at Sullivan High School on Saturday, April 12.
Washington’s team members were seniors Phin Schneider and Alina Hayden and juniors Nathan Oreskovic and Peter Bush. The team is coached by David Dennis.
Team members were Nathan Oreskovic (All-District as 2nd place scoring in prelims), Peter Bush, Alina Hayden (Peter and Alina both tied for All-District in 6th place scoring), and Phin Schneider.
Oreskovic was all-district as second place scoring in preliminaries. Hayden and Bush tied for all-district as sixth place in scoring.
The six teams on hand for the district meet drew numbers to play three preliminary games. The top four teams advanced to the semifinals.
In the morning, Washington defeated Sullivan, 620-170, and Westminster Christian Academy, 490-150. Following a 430-210 victory over Ft. Zumwalt South, Washington went to the afternoon as the only undefeated team and the top overall seed.
In the semifinals, Washington beat Sullivan again, 570-130, setting up a rematch of last year's district final against Wentzville Holt. Washington went on to win, 500-210, to win the district title for the second year in a row.
Oreskovic competed at the Individual National Championships in Chicago the weekend before Districts, placing 118th overall, which was the top half of the field.
Washington will host Mexico (the winner of Class 5 District 4) in a best-of-three state quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, April 22. Mexico is the fourth ranked team in the country as of last month. Since that ranking, one of Mexico's players, Andrew Peuster, won the same Individual National Championship tournament in Chicago that Oreskovic competed.
