Washington High School Senior Jack Henderson Receives Appointment to U.S. Naval Academy
Washington High School senior Jack Henderson has earned an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, one of the nation’s most prestigious and selective military academies. The appointment recognizes Henderson’s outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, character, and commitment to service.
Each year, thousands of students apply to the Naval Academy, but only a limited number receive appointments, making it one of the most competitive opportunities available to graduating seniors.
“I’ve wanted to be a pilot for a few years,” Henderson said. “Originally, I thought I would attend a traditional four-year college and then pursue OCS (Officer Candidate School), because you need a degree to become a pilot. One of the track coaches at the Naval Academy reached out to me and told me I could apply there and pursue that same path. That’s how it all got started. I’ll also be a member of the track and field team, and I’m hoping to compete as a multi-event athlete.”
Admission to a United States service academy is a rigorous process that evaluates academic performance, leadership experience, physical fitness, medical qualification, and character. In addition to meeting high academic and leadership standards, candidates must also secure a nomination - most commonly from a member of Congress - as part of the application process.
“To start with, you have to complete a questionnaire before you even receive the full application,” Henderson said. “It’s similar to a normal college application, but you also have to apply separately to your representatives and senators and interview with them because they have to nominate you. If they decide you’re a good fit, they can give you a nomination.
“I also had to pass a fitness test, which included push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, a basketball throw, a one-mile run, a shuttle run, and other events.”
Henderson received nominations to the Naval Academy from Senator Josh Hawley, to both the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy from Representative Ann Wagner, and to the United States Military Academy-West Point from Senator Eric Schmitt.
At the Naval Academy, Henderson will receive a world-class education while developing the leadership skills needed to serve as an officer in the United States Navy. Graduates earn a bachelor’s degree before beginning a required military service commitment.
“I would like to stay in the Navy for as long as I can, retire from there, and then we’ll see if I go into engineering or become a pilot afterward,” Henderson said.
Henderson has been highly involved during his time at Washington High School through Student Council, Leadership, National Honor Society, Link Crew, Junior WINGS, soccer, football, and track and field.
He was an all-state track and field medalist as a junior, finishing fourth in the Class 4 boys high jump after clearing 1.99 meters (approximately 6 feet, 6 inches).
Jack is the son of Russell and Susan Henderson. He plans to study mechanical engineering at the Naval Academy and will report to Annapolis, Maryland, on June 25.
“I’m excited,” Henderson said. “I’m a little nervous, but I feel like that’s normal for most people going off to college. It’s a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”
