Washington High School Hosts Jordan Scheer Memorial Children's Relay for Life; Over $22,500 Raised

Washington High School’s 21st Annual Jordan Scheer Memorial Children’s Relay for Life took place on Friday, April 24, at Scanlan Stadium.

The event was put together by the WHS Student Council and Leadership class. Advisors are Allison Chaney and Rachel Wehmeyer.

The theme this year was, “Riding Together for a Cure!”

There were approximately 300 elementary students in attendance and about 75 volunteers from student council, elementary schools and staff.

A total of approximately $22,500 was raised from this year’s event. Approximately $465,000 has been raised in the 21 years of the event.

Proceeds from the event are donated to the Franklin County Relay for Life and benefit the American Cancer Society and cancer awareness.

Students in grades three through six from the School District of Washington and area parochial schools participated in the event.

Event chairs are seniors Madelyn Ley, Emma Grafrath and Nathan Oreskovic, and juniors Kensley Guss, Natalie Metcalf and Tatum Reubell.

The relay is named in honor of Jordan Scheer, a WHS graduate who lost his battle to cancer shortly after his graduation in 2005.

The top fundraising schools were Immanuel Lutheran (first place), Labadie Elementary (second place) and South Point Elementary (third place).

Third Place: Grace Myers, St. John

Essay Fifth and Sixth Grade

First Place: Julia Pollock, Clearview Elementary

Second Place: Ellie Mehringer, Campbellton Elementary

Third Place: Jake Eckelkamp, Campbellton Elementary
